The Scogin Method: Speaking the Speech from Shakespeare to Shaw
ShawChicago Theater Company Hosted by Chicago's Goodman Theatre presents The Scogin Method: Speaking the Speech from Shakespeare to Shaw
(Four three-hour working sessions)
The Scogin Method
Through decades as a classical actor in New York, Chicago, around the country; as a Chicago director and for twenty-five years as the Artistic Director of ShawChicago Theater Company; and believing George Bernard Shaw to be the greatest and most important playwright of the English language since Shakespeare; Robert Scogin developed a proven technique (inspired by the Shakespeare First Folio Method) for exploring, dissecting, and performing the plays of Shaw, his modern contemporaries, and other classic playwrights.
Workshop Overview
Students will be introduced to The Scogin Method. With this technique, they will explore and focus on breath support, impeccable diction, intuitive phrasing, and learn to speak Shaw’s texts with unrivaled clarity, depth, and flair. A grasp of the Scogin Method will help to set actors up for successes beyond Shaw and the classics, as this new set of tools will equip them to instinctively analyze dramatic texts and know how to “hear the tune” and “play the notes.”

Bayless Family Foundation Grant Announcement
The Bayless Family Foundation will soon be accepting applications for its new "Stepping Stone" grants, which aims to bolster the bottom lines of promising Chicago theater companies.
The grant application can be found here.
Formed in 2017, the Bayless Family Foundation supports established Chicago theater organizations with a vision for institutional and artistic growth. It launched with an initial round of grants totaling $170,000 awarded to 17 theater companies in Chicago. (Chicago Tribune coverage)
The inaugural Stepping Stone grant will award selected Chicago theater companies with up to $150,000 over three years. Foundation executive director Kevin Sullivan says the intent of the grant "is to build the capacity of the awarded organization."
The foundation is accepting grant proposals beginning Nov. 26. The deadline to apply is Dec. 28. It should be noted that these grants are highly competitive, and we expect more qualified applicants than can be supported.
As noted in the applications, here's what we want to know: If you were to receive our grant, how would you use the award money in your yearly budget to remove a barrier and sustain the vitality of the organization?
Answers should be limited to 1000 words — that will help focus your answer and allow us to review all applications in a timely manner. With your submitted application, we will ask a few short questions and ask you to submit a few supporting documents, and those contacted in January will be asked for more information before the award is allocated.
Interested in applying for a Stepping Stone grant? Here's who's eligible:
• Theater companies registered as 501(c)3 organization that present theatre in the Chicago area.
• Theater companies that have produced a season of work for a minimum of five consecutive years.
• Theater companies with an annual budget of at least $250,000.
For those unable to submit online, please contact Executive Director Kevin Sullivan for more information by calling (312) 661-1434 x 125 or emailing BaylessFamilyFoundation(at)gmail(dot)com

20% Theatre Company Will Close its Doors
It is with a heavy heart that, after 15 years of production, 20% Theatre Company Chicago will close its doors on December 31st, 2018. We are so grateful to have been a part of this incredible Chicago theatre community and for all of the work we have been able to produce, including 12 Snapshots Play Festivals, 8 Dark Room Play Writing Workshops, 25 mainstage productions, and countless staged readings. 20% Theatre has had the privilege of working with nearly 1,000 different theatre artists, including over 200 playwrights, in fulfillment of our mission to create opportunities for women’s voices and perspectives to be amplified on stage. We have been honored to be a part of the journey for so many burgeoning artists on their way to greater achievements. In the 15 year history of 20% Theatre Company Chicago, we worked to increase the percentage of differently represented voices on stage. Our members are still fighting for equality of representation, but now in new and equally important ways away from the theatre. We are proud to have been a part of such important work and are encouraged by the continuation of this work by others in our shared community. We see you. We support you. We are excited to see what comes next. From all of us at 20% Theatre, thank you.

Call for Proposals for 2019 Night Out in the Parks Season
The Chicago Park District’s Call for Proposals for the 2019 Night Out in the Parks season is now LIVE! Click here to submit your 2019 NOITP Project proposal by December 14, 2018.
As you may know, in 2013, the Chicago Park District, with support from Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the City of Chicago and the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events, launched a series of cultural events and programs in over 230 parks citywide. Over the past six years, Night Out in the Parks has grown and expanded to over 1,200 cultural events in neighborhood parks across Chicago. Projects vary from music, dance and theater performances to community workshops, nature-based programs, site specific projects, festivals, and more.
Each year, we invite Chicago based artists and organizations to submit their best ideas for the Night Out in the Parks free public citywide event initiative. This year, in collaboration with the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and the League of Chicago Theatres, we’ll place a special focus on theater projects, as 2019 is the Year of Chicago Theatre! In celebration of this initiative we’re committed to producing theater in every corner of the city, all 77 community areas and all 50 wards! We define theater inclusively to not only include plays and musicals but also devised, experimental and interdisciplinary performance such as puppetry, circus, dance and opera.
We look forward to hearing from you and encourage you to also spread the word and share this opportunity with other qualified local artists and organizations you feel might be a good fit for this program. http://www.chicagoparkdistrict.com/events/night-out-in-the-parks/

Sing her Song of Life: A Prayer for Ntozake
Court Theatre has linked with FRESHH Inc Theater Company to create an opportunity and space for our communal prayers for Ntozake Shange's ascension to ancestor. We wish to honor and preserve her work as well as celebrate her contributions to our lives through her literary genius. We all are forever indebted to Ntozake Shange for her relentless commitment to make Black women ALIVE, with stories of joy, pain, and of SO MUCH LOVE on stages, on screen, in poems and in books. She brought us out to know ourselves, she sang Our songs. Without the warrior writer woman Ntozake Shange fearlessly forging the way, many of the spaces for women writers of color would not exist. For this, we are grateful. Join Court Theatre Wednesday November 7th from 5:30p - 6:30p as we celebrate the life and art of Ntozake Shange. There will be a synchronized communal reading coordinated with theaters in different cities. The text for the reading will be available so individuals can participate wherever they may be located.

Creative Residency Opportunity with Olin College of Engineering
SKETCH MODEL: OLIN COLLEGE CREATIVE RESIDENCY
Call for Applications: 2019-20
Olin College of Engineering is seeking applicants for its creative residency program, an initiative that’s part of Sketch Model, supported by the Andrew W. Greenhouse Theater Center to Undergo $400,000 in Renovations
Wendy and William Spatz, co-owners of The Greenhouse Theater Center (2257 N. Lincoln Ave., Chicago), today announced plans for $400,000 in renovations and upgrades to better serve the venue’s patrons, resident companies and visiting companies. Well-known Chicago architect David Fleener will spearhead the 18-month project at the multi-theater complex in Chicago’s Lincoln Park neighborhood.
Highlights of the renovation include:
· A major reconfiguration of the Upstairs Main Stage, allowing the space to function as one large theatre with seating for up to 198 patrons, or two smaller theatres with seating for 77-89 guests and 117-129 guests. The reconfiguration will also include new seating risers, two new sound booths, an onsite set workshop and added storage space.
· New risers in the 195-seat Downstairs Main Stage, completely rebuilt to provide better visibility and comfort for patrons (completed in September 2018).
· New men’s and women’s restrooms on the second floor, doubling the facility’s restrooms.
· Soundproofing throughout the complex to prevent sound bleed and allow for fully produced musicals.
· A new upstairs concession stand (completed).
Comments Co-Owner Wendy Spatz, “We’re excited to offer our resident companies and visiting artists greater flexibility at The Greenhouse, with a combination of five proscenium and thrust stages and a variety of seating options, ranging from a 58-seat studio to a 198-seat main stage – and everything in between.”

Claude Binder Memorial and Celebration of Life on July 16th
There will be a memorial and celebration of Claude's life and his tremendous impact on the theatre community, both locally and internationally, at Steppenwolf Theatre Company's downstairs theatre (1650 N. Halsted St., Chicago) on Monday, July 16 at 7PM, with cocktails immediately following.
Claude Binder worked professionally in the Chicago theater community for more than 30 years, over which he quietly, passionately, and sometimes cantankerously brought others people’s visions to spectacular life. His career as one of the unsung heroes of this city’s storied theater scene is legendary. His legacy is the love he shared with his wife, Lighting Designer Christine A. Binder, and their son Cody.
Born in Cleveland and raised in Chagrin Falls, OH, Claude attended the University of Kentucky to study journalism but switched to the theater department (because the girls were prettier there). He never looked back. Upon graduation, he got a job at Actors Theatre then moved on to the role of Technical Director at The Goodman. He talked extensively about how much he loved working with the incredible designers who came through The Goodman, saying “I’d like to see any schmo try to build a John Lee Beaty or John Conklin set!”
He had a DIY spirit, believing in doing it yourself if you want to get it done. That philosophy attracted him to his next role. After 11 years at The Goodman, he left to become Production Manager at Steppenwolf Theatre Company. While there, he participated in the “big move” from a 211-seat space on North Halsted Street to the company’s current complex. He spent 15 years at Steppenwolf. In that time, he led the company in mounting five productions to New York City, including the Tony award-winning production of “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” as well as moving productions to theaters in England, Ireland, Canada and Australia. Other accomplishments while at Steppenwolf include principal management of the reconstruction of the Upstairs Theatre which debuted with the world premiere of Frank Galati’s adaptation of “After the Quake”.
Claude left the Steppenwolf to become Executive Director at the new Chicago Children’s Theatre, and his leadership helped propel that theater to new heights. Unfortunately, cancer arrived at about the same time. After his first bout, he left Chicago Children’s Theatre to work for the Joffrey as Director of Production, then on to Milwaukee Rep only to return to Joffrey and Chicago shortly after. After he left Joffrey, he contemplated retirement but theater so much a part of who Claude was that he ended up spending a few months at American Blues before finally going for good. A month later, cancer had come back for the third time. He spent the last year of his life battling the disease in the same way he approached a seemingly impossible design request: with a strength of will to make the impossible possible.
Claude lost his battle on Sunday, July 1. A memorial will be held at Steppenwolf Theatre Company on Monday, July 16 at 7PM with cocktails immediately following. The memorial will be live streamed for those who cannot attend in person. The live stream will begin at 7PM on Monday, July 16 at www.facebook.com/steve.abrams.900.

Making your organization's office space or facilities more energy efficient doesn’t just help the environment — it can improve your bottom line for years to come.
Many nonprofits don’t take on energy-efficiency projects due to the initial expense required. You may be surprised to learn that there are grants to support energy-efficiency projects, large and small.
Learn from ComEd and Illinois Clean Energy Community Foundation how to make your nonprofit facility or building energy efficient! Lunch will be provided. Thank you to ComEd for sponsoring this program.

Equipment For Sale from DesignLab Rental Shop
Larry Schoeneman is closing DesignLab’s rental shop and is selling all of its lighting equipment inventory. After more than forty years of working in the Chicago theatrical community, it is time for me to better use what I know about lighting and be less involved with the taxing physical work of moving gear around. Therefore, I am closing DesignLab’s rental shop and will sell all of its equipment: lights, cable, truss and everything in between. We will be open for this sale from Friday June 22 through Monday June 2, from 8 AM through 6 PM. The terms for this sale are cash only – no checks or credit cards – and the equipment must be paid for before it leaves the building.
I have loved working with the entire performing arts community. Thank you for your friendship over the years. So, come down for a cup of coffee or to buy some gear. Hope to see you here.
