The Greenhouse Theater Center Seeks Proposals for 2018 Solo Performance Lab

The Greenhouse Theater Center is currently seeking proposals for new solo pieces to be developed during its 2018 Solo Performance Lab. Teams of artists (writer, actor, director) are encouraged submit proposals for plays that focus on an unexamined facet of a historical event or illuminate the life of a little-known historical figure, particularly events and figures which history has forgotten or intentionally excluded.

Curated by GTC Literary Manager Nick Thornton and GTC Artistic Associate Kate Cuellar, the Solo Performance Lab underscores the Greenhouse’s institutional commitment to creating solo works by offering local artists the space and support to develop new solo work. Solo Performance Lab participants will receive institutional resources including rehearsal and performance space, dramaturgical support, casting (if needed) and modest production resources. The Solo Performance Lab will culminate in free public performances at the Greenhouse (2257 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago) in February and March 2018.

Submission Guidelines
Artists are encouraged to submit a one to three page proposal, artist biographies, a ten page writing sample and an artistic statement through the Greenhouse website at greenhousetheater.org/sololab. The deadline for submissions is Friday, December 8, 2017. Please note: the Solo Performance Lab is open only to artists in the Chicagoland area. For additional information, please e-mail submissions@greenhousetheater.org.

The Solo Performance Lab is part of the Greenhouse's playwright-focused, professional development programming, which also includes The Trellis Residency Initiative, a professional development program for Chicago-area playwrights under 30, and the MC-10 Playwrights Ensemble, a collection of ten of the country’s most sought-after established and mid-career Chicago playwrights and theater-makers now in residence at the Greenhouse.

Artists Helping Artists, Family Helping Family for 30 years

Season of Concern is a unique organization, created 30 years ago by Chicago theater professionals to provide care for those in our community who were sick and dying from AIDS/HIV-related illnesses. Over the years, through the generosity of theater folk and theatergoers alike, Season of Concern’s mission has expanded to provide direct-care support for theater community members, union and non-union, who are experiencing any catastrophic illness or accident. In other words, we support our own and are proud of have done so for 30 years.

Every holiday season we ask local theatres to solicit audience donations to help our cause. It’s easy, fun, and life-affirming. Please contact Michael Ryczek at michael@seasonofconcern.org or visit our website www.seasonofconcern.org for more information.

Marc Bamuthi Joseph: The Closest Thing Going to Freedom..

Monday, October 2, 6:30 PM at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago Ave.
In this talk for Chicago theatre artists and administrators, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, arts activist, spoken-word poet, dancer, playwright, and Chief of Program and Pedagogy for the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA), will describe how an artist can bridge the gap between the personal and the institutional in pursuit of cultural shift. The presentation will draw connections between Joseph's creative work on stage developing /peh-LO-tah/ and the exciting vision he has implemented at the YBCA, and as curator of performance. By using culture as an instrument for social change, YBCA is re-imagining the role an arts institution can play in the community it serves. Additional examples will include his public practice with Creative Time, Life is Living, and the Guggenheim. In all cases, it's not just interdisciplinary collaboration that drives Joseph's vital work; it's cross sector conversation as a means of both research and goal setting.
This event is FREE, but RSVPs are kindly requested.

MARC BAMUTHI JOSEPH is an inaugural recipient of the United States Artists Rockefeller Fellowship, the winner of the 2011 Alpert Award in Theater, and an inaugural recipient of the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award. In addition, he’s served as an advisor and panelist for the Rockefeller MAP Fund, the PEW Charitable Trust, and the Zellerbach Family Fund among other national philanthropies. He is the founding Program Director of the exemplary non-profit Youth Speaks, and is a co-founder of Life is Living, a national series of one day festivals designed to activate under-resourced parks through hip hop arts and focused environmental action. Mr. Joseph recently premiered the Creative Time commission “Black Joy in the Hour of Chaos” in New York’s Central Park, and is currently completing a new work with Bill T. Other Theatre Seeks Play Submissions

Chicago's Other Theatre is currently seeking 30-minute world premiere plays for OTHER WAYS TO RESIST, its spring festival of new works. Open to both local and out-of-town candidates, the company is seeking new works exploring the performance of activism, protest in a social media space and acts of unconventional resistance.

Comments Artistic Director Carin Silkatis, “In a social and political climate of increasing polarization and extremity, Other Theatre is exploring the ways in which resistance can oppress and unwittingly recycle the tactics and structures of the very things it seeks to demolish. Peripherally, we are also interested in the ways in which people are fighting oppression that are less conventional and may not readily be labeled as political action.”

Scripts and inquiries should be sent to totcmanagingdirector@gmail.com, along with a current resume. The deadline for submissions is Monday, September 18, 2017.

Directed Nick Thornton, OTHER WAYS TO RESIST will play April 14 – May 13, 2018 at Other Theatre’s resident home, The Greenhouse Theater Center, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago. For additional information, please visit www.TheOtherTheatreCompany.com.

Chicago DanzTheatre Ensemble Seeking Short Play Submissions

Chicago DanzTheartre Ensemble (CDE) is seeking submission of short plays (10-15 minutes) to initiate our 17th season of performance! Read all information below and submit your proposal to info@danztheatre.org.

General Information:
CDE’s mission is to marry drama, dance/movement, music, and multimedia to create radical change within the world (also known as “performance with a purpose”). In October of this year, CDE kicks off their 17th season with a playwright festival. This is not your average festival. True to their danztheatre style, CDE wants October’s festival to also reflect this multidisciplinary approach. CDE is seeking playwrights to submit danztheatre style works to be produced and performed in October’s playwright festival.

Additional Information:
Accepted playwrights are the producers. CDE expects playwrights to take charge in the development of their works. As the Producer of the festival, CDE will try their best to assist where possible. Accepted playwrights are encouraged to enlist their own director, choreographer and performers. If this is not possible, CDE will assist as possible in this process. CDE will host an open call audition for directors, choreographers, performers (movers and actors) to assist those accepted playwrights needing help to cast their shows. More details about this open-call audition will be shared after the proposal process. CDE affiliated Ensemble members may also be available to perform. We envision a process of collaboration between dramatic and dance personnel. Smaller cast size is encouraged, but this is not an imperative. The space will be arranged as a thrust. We recommend minimal use of set, props, and costumes. If these are necessary, CDE will allow the Artist access to their props and costumes. If there is something you wish to use, CDE will establish terms with that Artist for use of renting costumes and/or props. We have no fly-space, alternate universe portals, mountain peaks, or icebergs. CDE will provide technical services for lighting and sound. CDE will manage publicity and promotion. Promotional materials will be made available to playwrights and performers for their use. While CDE will manage the publicity and promotion of the festival, CDE expects playwrights and their casts to promote their works. CDE will provide up to 10 hours of rehearsal space to each group. Use of space dependent on availability of the space. CDE will offer two comp tickets to each author and performer.

To Submit: Attach, in PDF or Word format to info@danztheatre.org:
-Your play
-A statement of your vision of incorporating movement/dance/music into the production.
-If you need assistance in finding directors, choreographers, or performers.
-If the play is accepted, we will ask for a short blurb about the play and a brief bio of the author (each 50 words or fewer) for playbill and publicity purposes.
Boogie down and break legs!
