Chicago Theatre Retreat Cottage

Beginning in fall 2013, The League of Chicago Theatres will provide a cottage in Michigan Harbor Country (70 miles from Chicago) for a select number of Chicago theatre companies to escape the city for a weekend company retreat. The cottage will provide theatres an ideal environment for relaxation, dedicated work, big-picture conversations, and group companionship. The retreat will encourage company growth through focused reflection and strategic planning for the future.

The beautiful 4 bedroom Michigan cottage is only a mile from Lake Michigan, and includes a large deck with two eating areas and a hot tub, a screened in porch and comfy kitchen, dining room and living room with fireplace. A perfect place to come and think, get creative, and rest. The retreat cottage is generously provided by Chicago theatre artist and educator Susan Padveen.

Any Chicago area theatre company that is a member of the League of Chicago Theatres is eligible to apply for this unique opportunity. A maximum number of 8 people are able to stay at the cottage. Only a couple of companies will be selected, and each will be asked to complete a short report following their stay. To apply please complete and return the attached application no later than July 15, 2013. Contact with any questions or concerns.

Call for Speakers/Topics for Chicago Theatre (Un) Conference

August 16-18 at Theater Wit
The fourth annual Chicago Theater (Un)Conference is back, a joint effort between the League of Chicago Theatres and Theater Wit. A full weekend structured to maximize conversation and exploration more than presentation self-generated from the Chicago Theater Community. We're mixing it up this year with a new format designed to create new ideas and work those ideas back into the community. You can suggest a topic and we'll find someone to talk meaningfully about it, or even better, why not volunteer to run a session and attend the conference for free? We want to hear from you about your ideas and questions for new work, audience engagement, playwright relations, venues, programming, outreach, benefits, dance, puppetry, accounting, legal issues, direction, design, community outreach. What new ideas are you toying around with? Looking to expand into? Experimented with in the last year? Click on the links and we'll get started.

Free Materials from EcoSet Consulting

EcoSet Consulting is a company who places leftover set dressing & art department materials from film and commercial productions back into the community. If you are, or know of, a local artist, small business owner, or individual who would benefit from these items, we'd be happy to consider them if the right match. Ideally, we'd like to donate to theaters or local non-profits but we are always open to other groups. The priority is to save these items from landfill! A lot of great set pieces will be available this Monday, June 17th early afternoon.

1) Soffit build: (see photo)
Curved back wall: 2' x 40' Truss: 8' x 45' x 2' (high)
It is skinned with luan and muslin that has been painted and held together mainly with staples--no glue.

2) Carpet: 55 yards grey with a dark green edge on one side. This was actually 2 different rolls that form the stripe.

3) Wood grain table with 2 wood grain round stools that fit underneath

4) Floor protector (will find out if it is cardboard layout board or plastic sheets)

5) Possible wood grain locker builds

6) Kitchenette cabinets and sink. (see photo)

Please indicate if you can bring:
-Enough labor to load
-Proper tools and securing mechanisms
-An appropriate vehicle to haul your items away from set.

Finally it is helpful if you are FLEXIBLE on plans since we are at the mercy of production’s schedule--things change on a dime and is out of our control, so please be prepared. Thank you for helping us keep these materials out of landfill!
