News From The Arts Work Fund
The Arts Work Fund recently evaluated the impact of its grants.
Lessons for funders: Continuous access to capacity building grants produced benefits beyond the bounds of any one grant or project; led to thoughtfully planned and paced projects; and produced greater clarity of purpose.
Lessons for small arts organizations: The most successful capacity building projects were backed by clarity of purpose, the organization’s leaders, and well-managed, high-quality consulting services; unexpected distractions and unclear or unrealistic expectations were most often a project’s undoing; and the type of deliverable, more than the type of project, governed the longer-term value of capacity building projects.
Lessons for consultants: staff capacity is a real but not homogenous challenge, one that needs frequent discussion before and during a consulting engagement; and most grantees got better at working with consultants with time and practice.
To read the full report, click here.
The Arts Work Fund is implementing the following changes to improve their grantmaking:
(effective October 1, 2014)
- The Fund will add 10 percent to each grant to support the organizational costs associated with the capacity building project.
- To be more responsive to projects as they emerge, there will no longer be specific grant deadlines. Applications will be accepted at any time throughout the year, with grant decisions made on a quarterly basis.
- We will move to the grant application system used by our fiscal agent,The Chicago Community Trust. You will still access the application from the Arts Work Fund website. This change does not preclude you from applying separately to The Trust, or the other funders that are members of the Arts Work Fund collaborative.

Dimming of the Lights
On
Thursday September 11, 2014 at 7:30pm, Chicago theatres will dim the
lights on their marquees for one minute to honor all the members of our
community we have recently lost.
If you have a marquee, please join. If you don’t have a marquee, perhaps you can consider dimming the house or lobby lights for one minute.
The dimming is being organized by Jason Epperson of the Greenhouse Theater Center.

Condolences
To my magnificent community of Chicago theatre:
There is not a single person in our community who is not
grieving our terrible losses today. Not
one of you hasn’t been touched in some way by the remarkable lives taken from
us too soon.
It happens; we lose someone, a friend, a colleague, a loved
one. The wider our circle the more loss
we risk and in Chicago theatre we have a large and loving family. But so many, so fast? It is unimaginable and nearly impossible to
bear. But bear it we must. “When you are going through hell, keep
going.” It seems trite but it’s the only
thing.
To the families and friends of Roy, Sati, Joel, Trinity,
Molly and Bernie you have the deepest condolences of thousands of colleagues
and audience members who cherished these stars of Chicago theatre. We join you in your grief and I hope there is
some comfort in that.
I hope that this community will be strong for each other and
for the families of our fallen comrades.
I hope we will honor them every day in our work. Roy Leonard’s family included this in his
obituary “in lieu of flowers be kind to each other.” Joe Foust, husband of Molly Glynn posted on
Facebook “Love hard people, love hard.”
May this horrible time always remind us to love hard and be kind. Please take care of yourselves and be safe.
Love,
Deb
