Deadline Extended for papers for 2011 Chicago Theatre Symposium

The Theatre Department of Columbia College Chicago will host a gathering of scholars and theatre artists from around the world to explore the history of Chicago theatre over the last half-century and the future of Chicago as a leading center of international theatre. Titled Chicago--Theatre Capital of America: Past. Present. Future, and scheduled for May 18-22, 2011, the event will focus on Chicago’s rise as a center of theatrical creativity, innovation, and influence over the past 50 years and explore the future of theatre in an atmosphere of rapidly increasing technological development and global communication. A wide range of presentations, panels, workshops, and performances will highlight the event.

A Call for Papers has been issued inviting theatre scholars and practitioners to propose presentations on a wide range of topics. The deadline for proposals has been extended to OCTOBER 1. Emerging scholars are especially encouraged to participate. In addition, a lineup of distinguished featured speakers is being assembled. Featured speakers confirmed so far include Richard Christiansen, author of A Theater of Our Own: A History and a Memoir of 1,001 Nights in Chicago; Martha Lavey, artistic director of Steppenwolf Theatre and board president of the Theatre Communications Group; Todd London, artistic director of New Dramatists and co-author of Outrageous Fortune: The Life and Times of The New American Play; Lisa Portes, head of DePaul University's MFA directing program; Harvey Young, director of Northwestern University's interdisciplinary doctoral program in theatre and drama and author of Embodying Black Experience: Stillness, Critical Memory, and the Black Body; and British theatre critic Michael Billington of The Guardian. In a 2004 article in The Guardian, Billington wrote:

Online registration for the symposium will be posted in mid-September at www.colum.edu/theatresymposium. Early registration costs $95, or $60 for students.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Deadline for submissions: October 1, 2010
E-mail proposals to: chitheatresymposium@colum.edu.

Be Engaging

Our new website is going to be awesome! The site has been designed as a fun and interesting marketing tool for Chicago theatre. It has been designed so that visitors can interact in a number of ways and so that they will move around the site and become interested in new theatres and new shows.

That’s why we made it possible for you to load so much on the theatre landing pages and the show landing pages. Both pages will accommodate video and photos, you can link to your twitter feed, your youtube channel, your flickr feed, post reviews, etc. But, here’s the thing, it takes about 10 minutes to load all that onto each page and you have to do it. I wish we could do it for you, but we can’t. If all you have up on your theatre landing page is a description of your theatre or your mission, that is boring and no one is going to click on the link to your website to see what you might be about. Visitors will be clicking through looking at theatres, looking at shows, the pages should be as engaging as possible.

A couple of suggestions: answer the “backstage with” questions on the theatre landing page, it gives you an opportunity to say clever and witty things about your company. Make a video about your company and post it on the theatre landing page, it doesn’t have to be anything super fancy, just something that says something about you. It’s fun.

We will follow the launch of the site with a marketing campaign driving traffic to the site so please take advantage of all the bells and whistles.

You should have received an email from us with specific instructions, if you did not receive such an email, please email ben@chicagoplays.com or laura@chicagoplays.com.

The Countdown Begins

The office has been buzzing this week as we’ve opened up the new website to members to begin adding their company and show content. It’s been an exciting and anxious last couple of days. Many hours of work have gone into the planning, development and testing to get the new site to where it is; so it was thrilling for us to let member theatres take ownership. We’re only a couple weeks from launching the site publicly now, so we’re asking that everyone begin updating their company and show information ASAP. (If you don’t, we’re going to keep bugging you until you do!) Every company should have been emailed a unique username and password from a League staff member yesterday. If you’re unsure if your company received one please contact ben@chicagoplays.com or laura@chicagoplays.com for your login info. We want to make sure that when we launch the site every member company’s page looks great. The clock is ticking!

Polarity Ensemble Theatre Accepting Script Submissions

Polarity Ensemble Theatre is now accepting script submissions for our annual Dionysos Cup Festival of New Plays, running May 12 through May 22, 2011. The festival will feature staged readings of four new full-length works. There are no restrictions on subject or style.

The Dionysos Cup is a multi-stage development process that culminates in two staged readings for each script. Past participating playwrights have hailed it as one of the most valuable script development processes of its kind. The festival is open only to Chicago area playwrights. All four Dionysos Cup scripts will be given serious consideration for a possible eventual full production.

Scripts should be mailed to Polarity Ensemble Theatre, 135 Asbury Avenue, Evanston, IL 60202. Enclose a synopsis and let us know if the play has had any previous performances or staged readings. We are considering only full-length scripts. We will read only one script per playwright. Scripts will not be returned, so do not send your only copy. Make sure all your contact information including email address and phone number is on your script. Please also email us or enclose your script in a file on disk to make it easier to share with the reading committee. Postmark deadline is September 27, 2010. Visit www.petheatre.com for more details.

The League and the Dramatists Guild of America invite theatres to join members of the Dramatists Guild from throughout the Midwest for a Meet and Greet on Sunday, September 19 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The event is designed so that representatives of theatres, such as Artistic Directors and Literary Managers, can have an opportunity to speak with playwrights, composers, lyricists and librettists about their mission, the kind of new work they are interested in, what kind of submissions they take, etc. The format will be a “fair” type, with each theatre having a table on which they can display materials. Dramatists will be invited to meet theatre representatives and to speak with them about their work. No submission of scripts will be accepted at the Meet and Greet. The event will be held at the Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington Street.

The Dramatists Guild of America was established over eighty years ago, and is the only professional association that advances the interests of playwrights, composers, lyricists and librettists for the living stage.
