Applications Open for High Concept Labs' Fall/Winter 2018 Artist Programs

High Concept Laboratories NFP (HCL), a Chicago-based arts service organization, today announced that it is now accepting applications for the 2018 Fall Sponsored Artist Program, HCL’s flagship artist and project incubator; and the 2018/19 Winter Intensives, a new short-term residency for working artists. Applications for both programs are open April 1 to May 13, 2018 and can be accessed at highconceptlabs.org/apply/.

The 2018 Fall Sponsored Artist Program runs from August 1 to November 30, 2018. Now in its ninth year, the SAP promotes the growth of artists and their work through the donation of customizable, no-cost support services including studio space, administrative and marketing assistance, workshops, mentorship, networking and artistic consultation. SAP projects are chosen twice a year and last for a period of four months.

The 2018/19 Winter Intensives will take place in one- and two-week durations from December 1, 2018 and January 31, 2019. As a new biannual opportunity offered by HCL, the Summer and Winter Intensives provide artists with a dedicated studio space to develop their projects. Through the intensive, artists will have the opportunity to create visual installations, durational performances, exhibits and other "activations" of the HCL studio at Mana Contemporary.

All applications will be reviewed by HCL’s recently expanded Artistic Advisory Council (AAC), an experienced, volunteer panel of Chicago’s leading arts practitioners, critics, writers, and thinkers who help guide the direction of HCL’s artist programs, including mentorship, programming and general artist support.

The 22 members of the AAC represent the fields of dance, film, music, sound art, theater, visual art, multimedia, and performance. Newly added AAC members include:
• Eliza Bangert (former HCL Sponsored Artist), Music
• Kim Davis, Dance
• Jenn Freeman, Dance
• Amanda Gutierrez, Film/Media
• Damon Locks, Visual Arts/Music
• Seth Parker Woods, Music
• Vershawn Sanders Ward, Dance
• Michael Zerang, Music

There is a $15 application fee for the 2018 Fall SAP and the 2018/19 Winter Intensives. Applicants may also be considered for HCL’S Institutional Incubation Program, a long-term invitational program that allows SAP participants to extend their residencies for continued project development.

To apply to the SAP or Intensives, or learn more about program criteria and the AAC, visit highconceptlabs.org/apply/.

DirectorsLabChicago announces 2018 Lab

Artistic Director Wm Bullion is pleased to announce the 2018 DirectorsLabChicago to be held Sunday, August 19, through Friday, August 24, 2018, at Victory Gardens Theater on Chicago’s north side. The theme for this year’s Lab is All Art is Political: Empathy, Identity and Intention in the Theater.

DirectorsLabChicago offers this annual week-long Lab as its flagship program. Now in its fourteenth year, the Lab has hosted 185 U.S.-based and 43 international directors, exploring themes such as The Language of the Stage, The Power of Myth and Ritual and The Kinetics of Directing. Previous presenters have included Robert Falls (Goodman Theatre), Martha Lavey (Steppenwolf), Leon Ingulsrud (SITI Company), Anne Cattaneo (Lincoln Center Theater), Chay Yew (Victory Gardens), and many more.

The Lab gathers directors from all over the world for a week of in-depth investigation of a single topic from multiple angles. It is geared toward professional directors in early- to mid-career stages, who are selected through a rigorous application process. As in years past, the Lab will consist of workshops and panel discussions with master artists, peer-led sessions, and visits to various Chicago productions.

DirectorsLabChicago was founded in 2005 by stage directors Elizabeth Margolius and Karin Shook as a result of their experience at the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab in New York. The artist service organization is very generously supported by the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab and the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, as well as by Victory Gardens Theater, our primary host for the 2018 Lab.

More information about this year’s theme, including details about eligibility and the application process, are available at directorslabchicago.com/this-years-lab. Applications will be accepted through Sunday, May 6, 2018.

Questions about the Lab may be directed to Bullion at billy@directorslabchicago.com. Learn more about DirectorsLabChicago at directorslabchicago.com and facebook.com/DirectorsLabChicago.

Space Assistance Grants from Theater Wit

We're really excited to announce that Theater Wit is offering space assistance grants for 2-4 newer/smaller companies in 2018/19. Theater Wit has always worked to make our home a contributing member to the general ecosystem, opening our three stage facility at cost to dozens of theaters. As part of our ongoing commitment to the wider Chicago Theatre Community, we are offering a limited number of space assistance grants for the 2018/19 season to bring in new companies and voices who might not otherwise be able to produce in our facility. We hope that this can open the doors to both audience discovery and company growth.

Space Assistance is available for new/emerging companies looking to produce primetime work at Theater Wit in the 2018/19 season. Applicants with projects led by artists of color and/or women are strongly encouraged to apply.

Grants are restricted to companies that meet the following criteria:
* Have produced two full length works in the last two years
* Have an annual budget of $400K or less
* For runs with a minimum of 16 performances
* Are operating as or under the auspices of a 501(c)(3)
* Have not performed at Theater Wit in the last two years.

Funding
Space assistance grants start at $2000. They do not exceed 40% of regular primetime rental rates and are calculated based on annual and project budget sizes.

Go check out the details and apply at https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/spaceassist
