Vacant Storefront Available Next Door to Redtwist

The vacant space next door to Redtwist might be available for a small theatre company to move in this summer. The size is about 1600 square feet, and after a build-out, it would be a double-storefront configuration similar to Redtwist. It's the same landlord as Redtwist and she is willing to cover the costs of tearing down a few walls to create a theatre space. The rent is reasonable and you might be able to negotiate a few months free rent too. Also, Redtwist needs additional space and would be willing to sub-lease a portion of the space, which would help to pay your monthly rent. Please contact Michael Colucci via email or phone: michael@redtwist.org or 773-728-7529.

$5 Teen Ticket Initiative Kickoff Meeting

Greetings,

Urban Gateways is reaching out to arts and culture institutions to gain support for a new city-wide initiative that will create unprecedented access for teens to experience Chicago’s performing arts events.

This initiative aims to enable teens to access to available day-of show tickets to performances in venues across the city and surrounding area for only $5. This would help arts organizations connect with younger audiences and fill houses while making high-quality arts experiences more accessible for Chicago youth.

More information about the project can be found here: https://sites.google.com/view/chicagoteentickets/home

To get this program going, we will be having a kick-off meeting on Wednesday, March 15th at 10:30 am at the Chicago Cultural Center for all interested parties and stakeholders, including arts organizations and venues, funders, and community institutions. This gathering will allow us to introduce the concept, show data from teens demonstrating the value of this type of program, and build support as we look to move forward. We sincerely hope that you, or an appropriate representative, can attend on behalf of your organization.

The event invitation is online here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/chicago-5-teen-ticket-program-kick-off-tickets-31978921816

Finally, as a formality, we are asking interested venues to fill out a brief form so that we may list them as Inaugural Partners of this initiative.

If you have any questions, concerns, or need any additional information, please do not hesitate to contact the Urban Gateways Performance Programs Manager, Tarah Durnbaugh (tortiz@urbangateways.org, 312-445-2750).

Inaugural Partner Form can be found here: https://urbangateways.tfaforms.net/24

New Development and Education Opportunities for Chicago Playwrights

After four years of producing plays in Chicago, Step Up Productions is reforming as Step Up Chicago Playwrights. In its new form, Step Up will dedicate itself to supporting new Chicago plays through paid residencies and commissions. Through its Chi Wrights education initiative, Step Up also hopes to foster a new, more diverse generation of Chicago playwrights. Founding Director Elizabeth Antonucci will continue to work with the company in an advisory role, while Brad Akin will step into the new role of Executive Director.

Beginning March 1, Chicago playwrights will be able to apply for a Neighborhood Residency from Step Up. Selected playwrights will be paired with one of Chicago’s neighborhoods and provided with connections to a diversity of communities in the area. Through sharing, participation, and observation, resident playwrights will have the opportunity to build a relationship with some of the dynamic communities that make Chicago unique. Executive Director Brad Akin believes that the opportunity will be incredibly useful for many of Chicago’s playwrights. “Playwrights aren’t just talented at writing stories,” says Akin. “They’re also talented at seeing stories in the people and places around them. This residency will help a playwright to see their own neighborhood in a new light, or to see another neighborhood for the first time.”

A key component in building the relationship between playwright and neighborhood is the Chi Wrights program, Step Up’s new education initiative. Built into each Neighborhood Residency will be play literacy classes and workshops that allow the resident playwright to share their knowledge and experience with interested neighbors. Whether it’s an introduction to playwriting for high school students or a master class for playwrights eager to improve their work, the Chi Wrights program allows resident playwrights to give back to the host neighborhood. It also allows Step Up to foster the next generation of Chicago playwrights.

“We want to develop plays, but we also want to develop connections between our theatre community and our neighborhoods,” says Akin. “Those aren’t two separate goals: we believe that meaningful Chicago plays will spring from meaningful relationships between playwrights and communities.” Playwrights who have completed a Neighborhood Residency will be eligible to apply for a Chicago Works Commission from Step Up. This commission will provide an $8,000.00 fee and support for workshops and readings.

For Founding Director Elizabeth Antonucci, building relationships between artists and neighbors has always been an important part of the organization’s mission. “It’s important that the stories we tell connect to our audiences in a way that has impact,” she says. While changing Step Up from a production model to a development model has brought a number of changes, that focus on connection has remained constant. “It was always a challenge to find plays that would connect to our Chicago neighbors. Now we’re building those connections into the plays themselves.”

Legacy Leaders of Color Video Project February 27 at Black Ensemble Theatre

Black Ensemble Theater proudly announces a special, one-night-only event to screen Legacy Leaders of Color Video Project (LLCVP), which features interviews with BE Founder and CEO Jackie Taylor. The event will be held at the Black Ensemble Theater Cultural Center, 4450 N. Clark Street in Chicago, on Monday, February 27, 2017, with a reception at 6pm and film screening and panel discussion at 7pm. The event is free and open to the public.

Following the screening, Tyronne Stoudemire, Vice President of Global Diversity & Inclusion for Hyatt Hotels Corporation and board chair of Black Ensemble Theater, will moderate a panel discussion with Angelique Power, President of the Field Foundation and co-founder of Project Enrich, Elena Chang, Associate Director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion for Theatre Communications Group (TCG), Gus Schulenburg, Director of Communications and Community Engagement of TCG, and Teresa Eyring, Executive Director of TCG. Additional panelists to be announced. The distinguished panel will address the importance of the arts as it relates to healing the racial divide and dismantling racism.

Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national organization for theatre, created the Legacy Leaders of Color Video Project (LLCVP) over a two-year period. Working with video production company MOPED, and with support from Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, TCG filmed a series of interviews chronicling the stories of founding leaders of theatres of color, including Black Ensemble Theater’s Jackie Taylor. Screening events will be held in the leaders’ communities to further celebrate their legacies and galvanize support for their enduring impact.

The interviews in the film reveal how these leaders were inspired to create opportunities lacking for artists of color; to challenge appropriation and misrepresentation through staging the full richness and complexity of racial, ethnic and cultural identities; to gain political power and creative autonomy; and to contribute their unique aesthetic and social perspectives to our culture. The LLCVP will serve as a roadmap for future theatre leaders and raise broader cultural awareness of the impact of theatres of color.

In addition to Jackie Taylor, other leaders featured in the video project include: Lou Bellamy, Penumbra Theatre, St Paul, MN; Tisa Chang, Pan Asian Repertory Theatre, New York, NY; Frank Chin, Asian American Theater Company, San Francisco, CA; Miriam Colón, Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, New York, NY; Woodie King, Jr., New Federal Theatre, New York, NY; Muriel Miguel, Spiderwoman Theater, New York, NY; Luis Valdez, El Teatro Campesino, San Juan Baptista, CA; and Douglas Turner Ward, Negro Ensemble Company, New York, NY.

The screening series will be led by Elena Chang, TCG’s associate director of equity, diversity & inclusion, and August Schulenburg, TCG’s director of communications & community engagement, and will roll-out over an 18-month period in the leaders’ communities.

Artistic Director/Leadership Action Assembly

Monday, March 6, 6-8PM
Theater Wit, 1229 W. Belmont Ave.
Theater Wit is looking to get a group of some (all?) of Chicago's artistic directors (or nearest leadership equivalent in some companies) for a community meeting to talk about what response people are planning in response to the current administration changes. The hope is to focus this conversation on programming and artistic director goals, independent as much as is possible from managing director goals. i.e., not the generalized problems of finance or the American Theater, but a conversation that would start from a question like "what are you looking to do today that you weren't planning on doing on November 7th?"

Holocaust Remembrance Day Play Readings 2017

The NJTF/HTII at UM Miller Center welcomes and invites your participation in the 3rd annual Holocaust Remembrance Day Play Readings to be held on Sunday, 4/23/17 and Monday, 4/24/17, Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah).

In our first 2 years our event honoring the victims and survivors involved theaters, universities, Jewish organizations and embassies in 11 states. Each selected a play of their choosing from our NJTF/HTII Holocaust Theater Catalog (htc.miami.edu). All followed their readings with a conversation or panel discussion that included their audiences. These simultaneous events affirmed the unique power of theater in Holocaust awareness and education. This year we also honor the late Elie Wiesel, who unbeknownst to many was also a playwright. Three scenes that he wrote, titled Dialogs are yours with the blessing of his widow and translator, Marion Wiesel and the Elie Wiesel Foundation. NJTF will send you Dialogs at your request, upon registration. Lincoln Center Library, in New York and UM Miller Center, in Miami have already committed to readings honoring this great man. We hope you will join them.

Please go to njtfoundation.org and find Remembrance Readings to register your organization. Any play or playwright you choose will be in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Wiesel. This project is greater than any one institution and invites collaboration among Artists, Educators, Holocaust Memorial Organizations and all people who collectively wish to use theater as an artistic and moral compass that educates and inspires current and future generations.

Thank You,
Arnold Mittelman
Founding Director, NJTF/HTII at UM Miller Center

National Open Captioning Initiative

TDF offers a limited number of two-year partnerships with professional regional theatres to sponsor open captioned performances and increase attendance by people who are deaf or hard of hearing. The sponsorship is intended as a service in and of itself for people who are hard of hearing or deaf rather than a supplemental service to be offered in tandem with regularly scheduled sign language interpreted performances.

Theatre Development Fund Provides:
COST OF SERVICE
Payment of expenses for contracting open captioning services through a professional theatre captioning company, which includes captioning fees as well as any travel expenses incurred by the caption operators during the preparation process and performance. Our service provider is c2, Caption Coalition Inc., for any OC sponsorship as we have a long-standing partnership with the company in modeling best practices on a national level. c2 is specific to TDF partnerships.

ASSISTANCE WITH PROMOTION
Listing of TDF sponsored open captioned performances at the partnering venue on TDF's website, with links for ticket purchasing; and publicizing these accessible performances through mail and email newsletters to TDF theatregoers with hearing loss.

EXPERTISE
Readiness to share experience on audience development, equipment options and funding; and to serve as a liaison, when needed, between producing entity and venue in regard to queries that may arise.

HOW TO APPLY:
Professional theatres interested in being considered for a partnership should send a letter of inquiry to tap@tdf.org by 6pm on April 21st, 2017 that briefly outlines the following:
*Commitment to providing better access for people with disabilities.*
*Indication of strong community support for open captioning; e.g., letter(s) from members of the community with hearing loss requesting open captioning and/or letter(s) from local HLAA chapter(s).*
*Proposed season schedule of open captioned performances with dates, times and productions listed, preferably in a series; e.g., one open captioned performance of each production in the Broadway series, offered on the first Saturday matinee of each show's run.*

Call for Theatres for Playwrights Welcome

Every theatre piece begins with an idea, a spark of imagination in a playwright’s mind. They stare down the blank page, writing, mulling and fiddling until it has been shaped into a real, impactful piece of art. Without their creativity and devotion, this art form that we love so dearly would simply not exist.

Playwrights Welcome is a new program created to support and inspire these writers, as well as the next generation of great American plays and musicals. The goal is simple: to provide free access to theatre for playwrights, composers and lyricists around the country.

Developed for the Dramatists Guild of America Members, Playwrights Welcome is a national ticketing initiative created by Samuel French along with Dramatists Play Service, Dramatic Publishing, Music Theatre International, Playscripts and Rodgers and Hammerstein. This program was made out of a desire to support the artistic health of our industry's writers, and by extension the vibrancy of the American theatre.

We’re aware that attending theatre is an integral part to how writers learn their craft and grows as artists. However, it can often be costly for writers to do that simple act. Playwrights Welcome is designed to offer available tickets to professional playwrights on the day of a performance, free of charge. These available tickets are ones that would otherwise go unsold; we firmly believe that no theater should give away a ticket that could otherwise be sold. To learn more about how your theater can get involved, or how you as a playwright can take advantage of this Dramatists Guild benefit, see below.

How it works: Theaters
Theaters can sign up to participate in Playwrights Welcome by filling out this form. Our Program Manager will be in touch with next steps. Once registered, theaters will receive a welcome packet, complete with language to use in marketing and promotion, a logo pack, and a window cling to display in your box office window.

Eligible playwrights will call or visit your box office for day-of tickets - or through a reservation system designed by your theater. Every box office works differently, and we know that you may not be able to offer day-of tickets, so managing reservations for this program is at your discretion. Our only requirement is that playwrights present their Dramatists Guild card to claim their ticket.
