October 24 Talkback with ALTA Chicago and Teatro Línea de Sombra

Tuesday, October 24, immediately following the 8:00 p.m. performance
The company of Amarillo joins the Alliance of Latinx Theater Artists (ALTA Chicago) for a conversation around ethnographic/autobiographical work that can be dangerous to perform. What are the risks we take when we tell stories that live in a landscape of violence and hardship? How do our experiences, our histories and our truths make us targets for violence? Stay after the show for a conversation with the artists of Amarillo about the making of the piece, and the risks artists take to tell a story.

Moderated by Issac Gomez, Co-Creative Director at ALTA Chicago and Director of New Play Development at Victory Gardens Theater

$10 tickets are available to the show that evening with the code CONNECT.

Marc Bamuthi Joseph: The Closest Thing Going to Freedom..

Monday, October 2, 6:30 PM at the Museum of Contemporary Art, 220 E. Chicago Ave.
In this talk for Chicago theatre artists and administrators, Marc Bamuthi Joseph, arts activist, spoken-word poet, dancer, playwright, and Chief of Program and Pedagogy for the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA), will describe how an artist can bridge the gap between the personal and the institutional in pursuit of cultural shift. The presentation will draw connections between Joseph's creative work on stage developing /peh-LO-tah/ and the exciting vision he has implemented at the YBCA, and as curator of performance. By using culture as an instrument for social change, YBCA is re-imagining the role an arts institution can play in the community it serves. Additional examples will include his public practice with Creative Time, Life is Living, and the Guggenheim. In all cases, it's not just interdisciplinary collaboration that drives Joseph's vital work; it's cross sector conversation as a means of both research and goal setting.
This event is FREE, but RSVPs are kindly requested.

MARC BAMUTHI JOSEPH is an inaugural recipient of the United States Artists Rockefeller Fellowship, the winner of the 2011 Alpert Award in Theater, and an inaugural recipient of the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award. In addition, he’s served as an advisor and panelist for the Rockefeller MAP Fund, the PEW Charitable Trust, and the Zellerbach Family Fund among other national philanthropies. He is the founding Program Director of the exemplary non-profit Youth Speaks, and is a co-founder of Life is Living, a national series of one day festivals designed to activate under-resourced parks through hip hop arts and focused environmental action. Mr. Joseph recently premiered the Creative Time commission “Black Joy in the Hour of Chaos” in New York’s Central Park, and is currently completing a new work with Bill T. Other Theatre Seeks Play Submissions

Chicago's Other Theatre is currently seeking 30-minute world premiere plays for OTHER WAYS TO RESIST, its spring festival of new works. Open to both local and out-of-town candidates, the company is seeking new works exploring the performance of activism, protest in a social media space and acts of unconventional resistance.

Comments Artistic Director Carin Silkatis, “In a social and political climate of increasing polarization and extremity, Other Theatre is exploring the ways in which resistance can oppress and unwittingly recycle the tactics and structures of the very things it seeks to demolish. Peripherally, we are also interested in the ways in which people are fighting oppression that are less conventional and may not readily be labeled as political action.”

Scripts and inquiries should be sent to totcmanagingdirector@gmail.com, along with a current resume. The deadline for submissions is Monday, September 18, 2017.

Directed Nick Thornton, OTHER WAYS TO RESIST will play April 14 – May 13, 2018 at Other Theatre’s resident home, The Greenhouse Theater Center, 2257 N. Lincoln Ave. in Chicago. For additional information, please visit www.TheOtherTheatreCompany.com.

Chicago DanzTheatre Ensemble Seeking Short Play Submissions

Chicago DanzTheartre Ensemble (CDE) is seeking submission of short plays (10-15 minutes) to initiate our 17th season of performance! Read all information below and submit your proposal to info@danztheatre.org.

General Information:
CDE’s mission is to marry drama, dance/movement, music, and multimedia to create radical change within the world (also known as “performance with a purpose”). In October of this year, CDE kicks off their 17th season with a playwright festival. This is not your average festival. True to their danztheatre style, CDE wants October’s festival to also reflect this multidisciplinary approach. CDE is seeking playwrights to submit danztheatre style works to be produced and performed in October’s playwright festival.

Additional Information:
Accepted playwrights are the producers. CDE expects playwrights to take charge in the development of their works. As the Producer of the festival, CDE will try their best to assist where possible. Accepted playwrights are encouraged to enlist their own director, choreographer and performers. If this is not possible, CDE will assist as possible in this process. CDE will host an open call audition for directors, choreographers, performers (movers and actors) to assist those accepted playwrights needing help to cast their shows. More details about this open-call audition will be shared after the proposal process. CDE affiliated Ensemble members may also be available to perform. We envision a process of collaboration between dramatic and dance personnel. Smaller cast size is encouraged, but this is not an imperative. The space will be arranged as a thrust. We recommend minimal use of set, props, and costumes. If these are necessary, CDE will allow the Artist access to their props and costumes. If there is something you wish to use, CDE will establish terms with that Artist for use of renting costumes and/or props. We have no fly-space, alternate universe portals, mountain peaks, or icebergs. CDE will provide technical services for lighting and sound. CDE will manage publicity and promotion. Promotional materials will be made available to playwrights and performers for their use. While CDE will manage the publicity and promotion of the festival, CDE expects playwrights and their casts to promote their works. CDE will provide up to 10 hours of rehearsal space to each group. Use of space dependent on availability of the space. CDE will offer two comp tickets to each author and performer.

To Submit: Attach, in PDF or Word format to info@danztheatre.org:
-Your play
-A statement of your vision of incorporating movement/dance/music into the production.
-If you need assistance in finding directors, choreographers, or performers.
-If the play is accepted, we will ask for a short blurb about the play and a brief bio of the author (each 50 words or fewer) for playbill and publicity purposes.
Boogie down and break legs!

TCG Fox Foundation Resident Actor Fellowships Program

To assist applicants on their Fox Fellowship application, TCG will be holding information sessions in June and July. The sessions will happen via teleconference and webchat and are free to attend. The sessions will be held: Thursday, June 22, 2017, 2pm-3pm ET and Wednesday, July 12, 2017, 2pm-3pm ET.

Description
A fellowship for actors that supports their artistic and professional growth in collaboration with a TCG Member theatre. Grants will be awarded in each of the following two categories:

Exceptional Merit
$15,000 (with an additional $10,000 available to relieve student loan debt) supports actors who are established in their careers as working professionals with 10 years or more of professional experience. Those with less experience are still eligible to apply but must recognize that they are competing with actors who have demonstrated a sustained dedication to their careers. Funds will support actors who are evaluating the current state of their career and envisioning what their career could be as they continue to grow in their artistry.

Distinguished Achievement
$25,000 supports actors with 20 years or more of experience who have amassed a substantial body of work. Recipients are awarded grants to allow them to look for opportunities for continued growth and sustain the longevity of their careers. Recipients will use these resources to adapt to the physical changes as an actor later in their career and changes to casting.

The goals of the Fox Foundation Resident Actor Fellowships are:
To further an actor's artistic and professional development.
To deepen and enrich his/her relationship with a not-for-profit theatre.
Ensure his/her continued professional commitment to live theatre.
To encourage actors to work outside their comfort zone.

The Host Theatre will receive $7,500 to be applied to costs associated with the actor’s residency activities.

The Saints Award $121,000 to Metro Chicago Performing Arts Companies

The Saints, Volunteers for the Performing Arts, have announced that they are awarding more than $121,000 in grants to 26 performing arts groups in the Chicago metropolitan area for 2017. The grants, ranging in amounts from $900 to $7,500, were awarded to archival, dance, music and theater organizations for 2017-18 projects. Over the last two decades, the Saints have given over $935,000 to nearly 250 companies and venues.

The 2017 grants are funding: archiving performances, the commission of new work, enhancement of performance space, costumes & props, ADA access, and the purchase of various kinds of technical equipment. Awardees, expressing their cultural and ethnic diversity, addressing underrepresented or physically challenged audiences and their dedication to the creative, span the metro Chicago area.

The all-volunteer grant commission evaluated nearly 170 proposals totaling almost one million dollars in monetary requests. Funding for the grants comes almost exclusively from the annual dues and donations of the over 2,300 members of The Saints. All donations are welcomed.

The Saints 4th Annual Grant Awards Presentation and Celebration will be held at the Athenaeum on Monday June 12. The doors will open at 6 pm for networking and a cash bar. At 7pm, we will begin the award presentation with Dueling Critics - Kelly Kleiman and Jonathan Abarbanel, as emcees. The public is cordially invited to attend this free event. RSVP to grants@saintschicago.org.

Announcing The Writer's Studio at Chicago Dramatists

Chicago Dramatists proudly announces The Writer’s Studio, an umbrella for all of our public programming at our Center for New Play Development.

The Writer's Studio is a reworking of the developmental programs and classes that Chicago Dramatists offers, to increase accessibility for all of the artists in our city. In our history of play development, playwrights could engage with Chicago Dramatists in one of three ways: by applying for our Residency program, taking classes, or paying a membership fee to participate in our development programs. The Writer’s Studio now allows any writer --- from the novice to the seasoned professional --- the opportunity to engage in all levels of our public programming. Chicago Dramatists is already seeing a wider range in the ages of our program participants and greater ethnic diversity as a direct result of our efforts to expand our mission of accessible art to the community. Our MEH Lewis Fund scholarships make it possible for us to include writers who could not previously afford to partake in our programming. We have also expanded our services to give writers more access to actors and industry gatekeepers.

The following Writer’s Studio programs are now available to anyone:
Script Review: If a writer from anywhere in the world would like feedback from a professional writer or dramaturg, they may send in their script and receive a 2-3 page critique in 3 weeks. Plays, screenplays, and TV pilots are welcome.

Table Readings: An opportunity for a writer to hear their script read aloud with professional actors, and a director or dramaturg leading the post-reading discussion. A limited number of table readings are available; a link to the application form is on our website.

First Draft Reading Series: One of our most popular programs is the Tuesday night reading series of scripts read by fellow writers. First Drafters convene, cast one another in their plays, read them cold, and a playwriting professional leads a talkback with the group. There are 42 First Draft readings per year. Joining the First Draft rolling membership guarantees the participant at least one reading per year.

Classes: The classes at Chicago Dramatists are the backbone of our organization, cultivating new writers, and providing a space for more experienced writers to hone their skills or branch out into screenwriting, TV writing, solo show writing, etc. Public Programs Director Mia McCullough is dedicated to providing a varied and eclectic array of offerings. By autumn, Chicago Dramatists plans to offer on-line classes as well.

Writers’ Groups: Our new writers’ groups offer dramatic writers a space to meet with fellow writers in a similar place in their career, workshop their scripts, and meet industry professionals.

Please visit our website www.chicagodramatists.org to for further details and pricing.

Williams Street Repertory Now Accepting Submissions for 2017-18 LAB New Play Reading Series

Williams Street Repertory, a professional theatre company located in the northwest suburb of Crystal Lake, is excited to announce they are now accepting submissions for their 2017 – 2018 LAB new play reading series!

“Writing can be a lonely, isolated endeavor. But plays are meant to be seen and heard,” explains founding artistic director, Richard Kuranda. “It’s imperative for the playwright to send their work out into the world. The collaboration that results from the meeting of playwright, director and actors is an essential step in the journey of any play and the growth of the playwright. LAB Series provides its playwrights with the opportunity to hear their voice (and their play) in the early stages of development. It’s an incredibly brave moment when a new work of art takes a breath in front of an audience for the first time.”

WSRep’s LAB Series is dedicated to showcasing new scripts and fostering new talent as well as giving the audience an artist’s perspective of the play-on-the-page. The goal of the series is to offer a public forum (free of charge), bringing audiences and theatre artists together to share and discuss a wide range of exciting work. Each reading is followed by a talkback and discussion.

This submission request is for new work and unproduced scripts only. If you are interested in submitting your script for consideration, please email the following materials to lab@wsrep.org:

1. A personal statement or letter of introduction (1-page max, please. Please include any specific questions you may have for your script that you would like addressed in the talkback.)
2. Two digital copies of your script in PDF format (one copy that includes your name and one copy with your name redacted).
3. A brief biography (150 words or less).
4. A jpeg picture or headshot and resume if you have one.
5. A simple list of any scheduling conflicts you may have already forecasted for 2017-2018.
The deadline for submission is June 16, 2017. For more information on WSRep’s LAB Series, visit wsrep.org/play-with-us.

DirectorsLabChicago Announces 2017 Lab

Twelfth annual Lab explores the director–audience relationship
Artistic Director Wm Bullion is pleased to announce the 2017 DirectorsLabChicago to be held Sunday, August 20, through Friday, August 26, 2017, primarily at Victory Gardens Theater on Chicago’s north side. The theme for this year’s Lab is Director¬—Audience: Engaging and Challenging a Distracted World.

DirectorsLabChicago offers this week-long Lab each summer as its flagship program. Now in its thirteenth year, the Lab has hosted 170 U.S.-based and 38 international directors, exploring themes such as The Language of the Stage, The Power of Myth and Ritual and The Kinetics of Directing. Previous presenters have included Robert Falls (Goodman Theatre), Martha Lavey (Steppenwolf), Leon Ingulsrud (SITI Company), Anne Cattaneo (Lincoln Center Theater), Chay Yew (Victory Gardens), and many more.

The Lab gathers directors from all over the world for a week of in-depth investigation of a single topic from multiple angles. It is geared toward professional directors in early- to mid-career stages, who are selected through a rigorous application process. As in years past, the Lab will consist of workshops and panel discussions with master artists, peer-led workshops, and visits to various Chicago productions.

DirectorsLabChicago was founded in 2005 by stage directors Elizabeth Margolius and Karin Shook as a result of their experience at the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab in New York. The artist service organization is very generously supported by the Lincoln Center Theater Directors Lab and the Stage Directors and Choreographers Society, as well as by Victory Gardens Theater, our primary host for the 2017 Lab.

More information about this year’s theme, including details about eligibility and the application process, are available at directorslabchicago.com/this-years-lab. Applications will be accepted through Sunday, June 25, 2017.

Questions about the Lab may be directed to Bullion at billy@directorslabchicago.com. Learn more about DirectorsLabChicago at directorslabchicago.com and facebook.com/DirectorsLabChicago.

High Concept Labs (HCL) announces a call for artists and collectives to take part in its Sponsored Artist Program during HCL’s Fall 2017 Season, August 15 through December 15, 2017. HCL is an arts service organization dedicated to supporting working artists and engaging the Chicago community with arts and culture. HCL fulfills its mission through the Sponsored Artist Program. The Fall 2017 Sponsored Artist Application is due by 11:59 PM CST on Thursday, June 15, 2016. Applications may be accessed at highconceptlabs.org/sap.

HCL’s Sponsored Artist Program is designed to promote the growth of artists and their work through the donation of customizable, no-cost support services including:
• Rehearsal, workshop, and performance space
• Administrative and production assistance
• Communications and design support
• Audience development and media outreach
• Artistic consultation
• Photo and video documentation (when available)
• Strategic networking for partnerships, funding, and creative collaborators
• Teaching and workshop opportunities
• Participation in HCL Artist Critique sessions
• and more

Projects are chosen twice a year and last for a period of four months. Each season is curated to represent emerging and established artists from a range of artistic disciplines. We sponsor three paths of development based on different intentions for the end-result of the project.
• Incubation – projects that require services to support the long-term development of a body of work and are not geared toward a public showing.
• Workshop – projects that are geared toward a workshop-showing of work after a period of incubation. The purpose of the showing is to gauge the development of the work and see how it changes in the presence of an invited audience.
• Exhibition/Performance – HCL acts as a producing partner to present a formal exhibition or performance for the public (may or may not also include a period of incubation and/or workshop).

Successful applicants will be emerging or established artists or collectives with a history of successful work (need not be in same discipline as application project) and with clear goals for their Sponsorship. Accepted artists will be chosen to represent an array of artistic practices and will be chosen by HCL’s Staff and Artistic Advisory Council.
