Holocaust Remembrance Day Play Readings 2017

The NJTF/HTII at UM Miller Center welcomes and invites your participation in the 3rd annual Holocaust Remembrance Day Play Readings to be held on Sunday, 4/23/17 and Monday, 4/24/17, Holocaust Remembrance Day (Yom HaShoah).

In our first 2 years our event honoring the victims and survivors involved theaters, universities, Jewish organizations and embassies in 11 states. Each selected a play of their choosing from our NJTF/HTII Holocaust Theater Catalog (htc.miami.edu). All followed their readings with a conversation or panel discussion that included their audiences. These simultaneous events affirmed the unique power of theater in Holocaust awareness and education. This year we also honor the late Elie Wiesel, who unbeknownst to many was also a playwright. Three scenes that he wrote, titled Dialogs are yours with the blessing of his widow and translator, Marion Wiesel and the Elie Wiesel Foundation. NJTF will send you Dialogs at your request, upon registration. Lincoln Center Library, in New York and UM Miller Center, in Miami have already committed to readings honoring this great man. We hope you will join them.

Please go to njtfoundation.org and find Remembrance Readings to register your organization. Any play or playwright you choose will be in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Wiesel. This project is greater than any one institution and invites collaboration among Artists, Educators, Holocaust Memorial Organizations and all people who collectively wish to use theater as an artistic and moral compass that educates and inspires current and future generations.

Thank You,
Arnold Mittelman
Founding Director, NJTF/HTII at UM Miller Center

National Open Captioning Initiative

TDF offers a limited number of two-year partnerships with professional regional theatres to sponsor open captioned performances and increase attendance by people who are deaf or hard of hearing. The sponsorship is intended as a service in and of itself for people who are hard of hearing or deaf rather than a supplemental service to be offered in tandem with regularly scheduled sign language interpreted performances.

Theatre Development Fund Provides:
COST OF SERVICE
Payment of expenses for contracting open captioning services through a professional theatre captioning company, which includes captioning fees as well as any travel expenses incurred by the caption operators during the preparation process and performance. Our service provider is c2, Caption Coalition Inc., for any OC sponsorship as we have a long-standing partnership with the company in modeling best practices on a national level. c2 is specific to TDF partnerships.

ASSISTANCE WITH PROMOTION
Listing of TDF sponsored open captioned performances at the partnering venue on TDF's website, with links for ticket purchasing; and publicizing these accessible performances through mail and email newsletters to TDF theatregoers with hearing loss.

EXPERTISE
Readiness to share experience on audience development, equipment options and funding; and to serve as a liaison, when needed, between producing entity and venue in regard to queries that may arise.

HOW TO APPLY:
Professional theatres interested in being considered for a partnership should send a letter of inquiry to tap@tdf.org by 6pm on April 21st, 2017 that briefly outlines the following:
*Commitment to providing better access for people with disabilities.*
*Indication of strong community support for open captioning; e.g., letter(s) from members of the community with hearing loss requesting open captioning and/or letter(s) from local HLAA chapter(s).*
*Proposed season schedule of open captioned performances with dates, times and productions listed, preferably in a series; e.g., one open captioned performance of each production in the Broadway series, offered on the first Saturday matinee of each show's run.*

Call for Theatres for Playwrights Welcome

Every theatre piece begins with an idea, a spark of imagination in a playwright’s mind. They stare down the blank page, writing, mulling and fiddling until it has been shaped into a real, impactful piece of art. Without their creativity and devotion, this art form that we love so dearly would simply not exist.

Playwrights Welcome is a new program created to support and inspire these writers, as well as the next generation of great American plays and musicals. The goal is simple: to provide free access to theatre for playwrights, composers and lyricists around the country.

Developed for the Dramatists Guild of America Members, Playwrights Welcome is a national ticketing initiative created by Samuel French along with Dramatists Play Service, Dramatic Publishing, Music Theatre International, Playscripts and Rodgers and Hammerstein. This program was made out of a desire to support the artistic health of our industry's writers, and by extension the vibrancy of the American theatre.

We’re aware that attending theatre is an integral part to how writers learn their craft and grows as artists. However, it can often be costly for writers to do that simple act. Playwrights Welcome is designed to offer available tickets to professional playwrights on the day of a performance, free of charge. These available tickets are ones that would otherwise go unsold; we firmly believe that no theater should give away a ticket that could otherwise be sold. To learn more about how your theater can get involved, or how you as a playwright can take advantage of this Dramatists Guild benefit, see below.

How it works: Theaters
Theaters can sign up to participate in Playwrights Welcome by filling out this form. Our Program Manager will be in touch with next steps. Once registered, theaters will receive a welcome packet, complete with language to use in marketing and promotion, a logo pack, and a window cling to display in your box office window.

Eligible playwrights will call or visit your box office for day-of tickets - or through a reservation system designed by your theater. Every box office works differently, and we know that you may not be able to offer day-of tickets, so managing reservations for this program is at your discretion. Our only requirement is that playwrights present their Dramatists Guild card to claim their ticket.
