City Lit seeking submissions for Art of Adaptation Festival
City Lit Theater Company seeks submissions to The Art of Adaptation, its annual festival of stage adaptations of non-dramatic literature.
The festival will take place May 29th, 30th and 31st at City Lit Theater, 1020 W. Bryn Mawr Avenue. We anticipate it will consist of 6 to 10 adaptations presented in various combinations over the course of the weekend. A panel of judges will view all performances and award a $500 cash prize to the adaptor of the piece judged the best of the festival.
THE RULES:
1. All pieces must be 20 minutes or less. If your piece exceeds the time limit, it will not be eligible for the prize.
2. It must be an adaptation of non-dramatic material—a short story, an essay, a memoir, poetry, an excerpt from a novel, a video game, what have you; but not material from a play.
3. All pieces must be world premiere adaptations.
4. Each adaptor is responsible for whatever royalties might be due on your piece, as well as for your own rehearsal process. City Lit will not provide rehearsal space prior to tech rehearsal, nor will it provide services of a director or any actors for any piece.
5. The piece you submit must be the piece you perform - no drastic changes can be made to the script after it is accepted.
6. All pieces will be performed on the same simple unit set with the same simple light plot. A stock of furniture will be provided. If your piece requires furniture beyond the provided stock, it is your responsibility.
7. All adaptors must provide a $20 deposit for the set pieces and costumes used, to be returned in full when all items are properly returned to City Lit's costume/furniture stock.
8. City Lit will provide performance space, backstage and front-of-house crew, publicity, programs, tickets and the $500 cash prize.
To submit a proposal for entry into the festival, send a .pdf copy of your adaptation script to Katy Nielsen at AofA@citylit.org
Proposals must be submitted no later than April 6th.

Stand Up for Arts and Culture in Illinois
We have important information that affects you directly to share from our colleagues at Arts Alliance Illinois.
CHICAGO MAYORAL ELECTION
Voter turnout and civic engagement are essential to a thriving democracy.
On April 7th, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Cook County Commissioner Jesús "Chuy" Garcia will face-off in Chicago's first ever run-off election for mayor.
Both as organizations and individuals, we need to be active this election season in order to promote arts-friendly public policies and actions. Arts Alliance Illinois has called upon both Mayor Emanuel and Commissioner Garcia to share their views on arts policy issues. This information will be shared in the coming weeks.
In the lead-up to the April 7th runoff, we will keep you posted on nonpartisan ways that you can help place culture and the arts center stage this election season. In addition - as a citizen and voter - there are a number of ways that you can get involved with the mayoral campaign of your choice. If you work for a nonprofit, be sure to stay within permissible guidelines for political activity. A good resource can be found in Independent Sector's Election-Related Activities for 501c3 Organizations. Or check with your organization's counsel or tax accountant.
To learn more about the candidates, we encourage you to visit:

ILLINOIS ARTS COUNCIL BUDGET
Governor Bruce Rauner has proposed $6 billion in cuts to state programs and services, including significant cuts to child care, public transit, higher education, youth services, and much more. The Governor's recent actions would also slash the state's investment in culture and the arts by drastically cutting the Illinois Arts Council Agency's budget.
The Illinois Arts Council Agency (IACA) is facing a freeze and a proposed draconian cut -- a spending freeze for the current fiscal year (FY2015) and a proposed 20% reduction to the agency's budget for next fiscal year (FY2016).
Arts Alliance Illinois and its many partners are educating lawmakers about the benefits of culture and the arts. They recently sent a letter sent to Governor Rauner outlining how the proposed budget cuts are counterproductive and do nothing to stimulate economic growth. (CLICK TO VIEW LETTER) The Alliance also continues to forge partnerships with policy makers and public agencies, raise awareness of the benefits of arts and culture, and empower advocates throughout Illinois.
The budget process is not over. It's time to stand up for arts and culture in Illinois. Send an email now to Governor Rauner and your state lawmakers urging them to protect the small but essential state investment in IACA.

Grant Opportunity for Mid-Size Theaters
Supported by an Anonymous Foundation
March 2015
This grant program will support Chicago’s vibrant and thriving theater scene. The donor recognizes that theaters require financial support at a level that exceeds ticket sales, and that human capital is a critical element in the success of a theater’s mission. The Foundation is accordingly committed to helping theaters develop their infrastructure in order to support artistic excellence. The Foundation will provide a three-year commitment of $25,000 per year to support human capital and infrastructure as determined by the organization, whether in the areas of management, fundraising, operations, or artistic development or execution. Grantees must submit satisfactory annual progress reports each year. For 2015 the Foundation expects to award grants to two or three mid-sized theater organizations, to be selected through a competitive process.
Grants are designed to help mid-sized theaters build or strengthen their artistic, administrative, operational, or fundraising capacity so that theaters are well positioned to achieve their artistic missions.
In a proposal to the Foundation, theaters should articulate how funding for designated positions will strengthen the organization, and therefore the ability to carry out the theater’s artistic endeavors. Proposals should indicate what metrics the theater will develop and implement to assess its progress during the course of the grant.
To be eligible, theaters must:
- Be located in the city of Chicago.
- Have annual budgets between $250,000 and $1.5 million.
- Be a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in good standing.
- Present a season of at least three main stage productions.
To apply, theaters must:
- Submit a proposal (maximum of 10 pages) describing the history, mission, programs and activities of the organization. The proposal should describe the intended use of the funds and how/why the support will advance the theater’s work. Theaters should indicate the measures of success they will report as evidence of the strengthened capacity of staff to achieve the organization’s mission. The proposal should also indicate mileposts to be achieved in six-month increments. Required attachments include:
o Most recently completed financial audit.
o IRS determination letter of 501(c)(3) status.
o Board of Directors list.
o Current budget.
o List of other sources of funding.
- Participate in a site visit with Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors staff.
Proposals are due by May 1, 2015. Applications will be reviewed by foundation trustees and Rockefeller Philanthropy Advisors staff. Recipients will be notified of decisions in June.
To submit proposals and for questions, please contact Jon Quinn at Jquinn@rockpa.org or 312-324-0733.
